Choosing a Private Investigator School
In order to work as a private investigator, it is necessary that you attend some kind of private investigator school. While there are a large number of specialty private investigator schools out there, you should know how to distinguish the good from the bad. Also, you will need to decide whether or not you want to go the traditional classroom route or use distance learning. Distance learning involves completing a portion of your coursework from home, on your computer. Even if you attend a two or four year educational institution in some cases you can do some of your course work at home from your computer.
When choosing a private investigator school, you should already have a clear picture of what a PI does and what your job duties may be. This can be gained by visiting an agency or two and asking about the career field. Private investigators do sometimes follow people around, take stealthy photos and perform exciting stakeouts, but they also do a large amount of desk work. Many investigators are data analysts and even accountants who are hired to find discrepancies in accounting cases. Some are specially trained in computer forensics. Whether you want to be behind the computer or in the field is your choice.
You should select a school that fits best with your job goals. The majority of successful private investigators have their Bachelor's Degree in a related field and have completed all certification required to become licensed in their state of residence. You don't have to have a Bachelor's, but it is something to work towards. An Associate's Degree is usually enough to get you in the door of a good agency. A great number of investigators have worked in a related field for the military, police, a security agency or even the government – but previous experience is not necessary to get into school.
What you will need is a high school diploma or GED. Then you will need to successfully complete a two to four year college program related to private investigation. At the least, you could attend a two year vocational school for private investigator certification. And, you will need adequate training in the field before you can do solo assignments. No matter what private investigator school you graduate from, any agency will probably pair you with a more experienced investigator until you gain more job experience.
